Looking for A Celebrity ?

Sometime in mid January of 2005, department of Pharmacology, Smolensk State Medical Academy, Smolensk : It was relevantly a hot day as snow started melting on our hostel balconies and finally some sun could be seen on the smolenski horizon. I kept my apron unbuttoned while entering the pharma class and was stopped by Prof. Klimkina madam at the doorstep. She politely asked me to button up and said Trayambak , this apron is given by the gods themselves from the heaven above to only the chosen ones ." That day i couldn't understand the importance of the saying.

{5years later}, 3:00 am, 10th February 2011, ER posting of my internship at SSKM Hospital, Kolkata : It was a hectic Emergency night shift for us with patients inflowing at the rate of staggering 3 to 4 per minute. Thanks to our team in the ER and my co-interns , that somehow we could manage the load. In the mean time a stretcher rushed into the ER carrying a young girl in it. I gazed to find out that her head was submerged in a pool of blood ! Behind the stretcher rushed a young man who seemed to have suffered bruises over his face. Such critical was the state of the girl that our S.R.O.D. Sir rushed himself to the patient and quickly asked for how it happened. “She suffered a road traffic accident on a bike with me riding it !” the young man presumably her boy friend explained with mixed sense of panic and affright. She was immediately admitted to the NCB {New Casualty Block} of SSKMH, where a team of a CTVS, Orthopaedic surgeon, and Plastic surgeon operated on her in an emergency OT setup to stop the hemorrhage from her head. She had suffered multiple fractures of not only the skull bones but other vital weight bearing bones too ! 7 weeks later i saw a smile on her face while she weakly held her boyfriend’s hand .. The feeling i had is unexplainable in words! That day i could very well understand Prof. Madam Klimkina’s words of wisdom and tears gushed into my eyes.

There are a million such incidences in our daily lives! There are a million ways we help you! And there are a million sacrifices we make every day every moment to help you! Still remember we used to have dinner at 2 am during our night shifts of labour on calls in the dept. of obstetrics and gynaecology at SSKMH. At times during a hectic schedule we do miss our family ; we do miss experiencing the first rain ; or the Manchester united - Chelsea live match at Old Trafford and later to reach home to find out that MAN - U won ; or not picking up a phone call from our love just because we are busy setting up a i/v cannula into a hypoglycemic patient as his CBG came up to be 20 and he needed an urgent i/v dose of 25D ; or at the end of a busy week just to learn that we have a rotational 24 hrs on call on our birthday ! This is what defines us. Our work! This is what we are. So the next time you look for a celebrity, look for us :) !
